Hard hats (ANSI Z89.1) are required wherever there is a risk of falling objects or significant impact to the head — construction sites, manufacturing floors, energy facilities. Bump caps are only appropriate where the risk is low overhead fixed hazards with no falling object risk — warehouse aisles, vehicle maintenance bays, some food production environments.
Inspect hard hats before every use. Replace immediately if subjected to significant impact, if the shell shows cracks, dents or discolouration, or if the suspension system is damaged. Most manufacturers recommend replacement every 2-5 years regardless of condition.
